When Steve and Gaynor Lewis visited Ukraine on a recent Trustee visit, the last place they expected to visit was a mortuary in Chernivtsi.
They were visiting a regional hospital, and the consultant paediatric neurosurgeon was clearly distressed at the number of children that were not recovering following surgery. He took them to the mortuary to meet the director.
The conditions there were best described as difficult, as the equipment he had was old and no longer fully functional. The director, a man of passion and great dedication was just not able to adequately give answers to why the children were not surviving as they should be following surgery.
On behalf of Hope for Ukraine, a commitment was made to source as much relevant equipment as could be found and ship it to them as soon as possible. In October that commitment was met in part, as much more equipment is still needed.
